hyover Russia’s Invasion to Ukraine (A Systemic Functional Linguistics Study)

This research aims to analyze a speech delivered by the President of the United States, Joe Biden in discussing the Russia’s Invasion to Ukraine using Systemic
Functional Linguistics study. This type of research is research in analyzing a
speech or text in orally or in writing. Source of this research is the speech that was
first delivered by President Joe Biden at a state of the union address in discussing
about Russia’s Invasion to Ukraine. This research was conducted over a period of
9 months from March to November to analyze the data and complete it. Data
collection techniques are video documentation, speech transcripts, and analysis.
Data analysis techniques in this research is descriptive qualitative.
The results showed that there are 3 language function commonly referred to as
metafunctions, namely ideational metafunction, textual metafunction, and
interpersonal metafunction. This is show by the total appearance of the speech
function in Joe Biden’s speech Over Russia’s Invasion to Ukraine, the three
existing language functions, namely ideational metafunction (2 utterances),
textual metafunction (97 utterances), and interpersonal metafunction (7
utterances). These results indicate that Joe Biden’s speech used speech function in
theme that represent clause as message. It means that the meaning of the functions
that were in the speech of Joe Biden describes the beginning of the message used
by the speakers about what they need to say in the speech because in the speech of
Joe Biden provides more information about the world war between Russia and
Ukraine and their support for the Ukrainian people. Joe Biden’s speech also
categorized as a type of speech function in statement based on the most used or
found in speeches delivered by Joe Biden in discussing Russia’s invasion of
Ukraine.
